We Went Looking For The Most Premium Dumbbell Set You Can Order Online. The Priciest Was $8,930. The Winner Was $2,700.

Ten pairs of dumbbells, 5 to 50 pounds, on a rack, from the names serious gyms buy. We priced that exact set from Eleiko, Ivanko and Rogue on their own websites, wrote four tests for the word premium, and only one set passed all four. It cost $2,700 with the rack.

Everything in my garage was commercial grade except the dumbbells

It took me a few years to build the garage. The power rack is the kind a strength coach bolts to a gym floor. The bench and the plates came out of the same commercial catalogues. Next to all of it sat the rubber hex set I bought in the first month, on a black A frame stand, back when I thought dumbbells were for curls.

Those dumbbells did more work than anything else in the room, and they looked it. The painted numbers went first, so I learned the 25s from the 30s by feel. The rubber split next, on the pair I used most. On hot afternoons the whole garage smelled like a tyre shop.

Three scuffed rubber hex dumbbells on a concrete floor, one head cracked across, the painted numbers almost gone

So I gave the replacement one job. It had to be the last dumbbell set I ever bought, which meant the best one I could actually buy, not the cheapest one that would do. My editor turned that into an assignment. The desk would price the set the way a reader would, on each maker's own website, with a cart and no sales call, and then say which one we would spend our own money on.

What the famous names cost when you try to check out

The set we priced is the one most gyms start with: ten pairs, 5 to 50 pounds in five pound steps, 550 pounds of iron in all, plus a rack to keep it on. Three names come up first whenever people argue about the best dumbbells money can buy.

Eleiko is the Swedish company best known for competition barbells and plates. Its US store sells one line of fixed weight dumbbells, the Evo, with polyurethane heads made in Halmstad. The 5 to 50 set is $6,780. Eleiko's 10 pair rack is another $2,150, which brings the pair of them to $8,930. One pair of 50s alone is $1,020. We could not buy it. On the day we checked, the set page read Out of Stock, with Notify Me and Add to Quote buttons where checkout should be, and the rack showed no stock either. What Eleiko wins outright is proof of toughness: it says the Evo heads have survived more than 550,000 drops without functional damage.

Ivanko is the American name, and its top dumbbell says so. The IUDB urethane line is listed as 100% made in the USA, on solid steel handles. The 5 to 50 set is $5,150 on Ivanko's price list and the 5 to 100 set is $13,000, but that page has no cart button. You order it by quote. The urethane pairs Ivanko does sell online are a closeout that skips the 5, 10, 35 and 40 pound sizes, so the set cannot be built from those either. Its closest match to what I wanted is in the cart: a machined cast iron set with chromed end plates, $2,417.50 for 5 to 50, plus $1,000 for its 10 pair rack. Ivanko wins on where it is made, and nobody else on this list is close.

Rogue is the easiest of the three to actually buy. Its urethane set, 5 to 50 pounds, is $2,420 in a normal online cart, the 5 to 100 set is $8,995, and its 3 tier dumbbell rack is $992.50, so a racked 5 to 50 set lands at $3,412.50. Rogue also wins one category outright. It is the only one of the three that prints a tolerance: plus or minus 3% of the stamped weight, which on a pair of 50s is a pound and a half either way.

Four tests for the word premium

Price alone could not be the test, or Eleiko wins by being the most expensive thing on the internet. These are the four things a set had to prove before we would call it the best one you can order.

  1. Metal on the outside. No rubber or urethane shell over the iron. Urethane is a big step up from my split rubber, and Eleiko's drop testing proves it. I still wanted nothing on the outside that could tear, scuff or smell.
  2. A price on the page and a button that takes the order. No quote form, no Notify Me, no dealer phone call. If it is the best set you can order online, you have to be able to order it online.
  3. The whole ladder in one click. Every pair from 5 to 50 in five pound steps, all the same model, in the cart as one set.
  4. The rack in the same price. Twenty dumbbells on the floor is a pile, not a set. The rack is part of what you are buying, so it is part of the price we compared.

Eleiko failed all four on the day we checked: urethane heads, no checkout, no stock and a rack sold separately. Ivanko's urethane set failed the same four. Rogue passed two, the cart and the full ladder, and missed on urethane and the separate rack. Ivanko's machined set with the chrome ends came closest with three passes, and missed only on the $1,000 rack.

We meant to have a fifth test, a printed weight tolerance. Only Rogue prints one, so it would have been a test with one winner and two shrugs. We kept it as a fact instead, and it comes back further down, because it matters for the set that won as well.

The set that passed all four

The set that cleared every line was the one none of us priced first. It is the Kensui Calibrated Chrome Dumbbells, and the 5 to 50 pound set is ten pairs on a two tier black rack for $2,700. The rack is in that price. There is no separate line for it at checkout.

Metal on the outside: the heads are machined and finished in mirror chrome, with nothing molded over them. On each end, the logo and the weight sit in a brushed metal plate, so the number is part of the dumbbell rather than paint on a coating. Price and cart: $2,700 on the product page, an ordinary checkout and free shipping in the US. The whole ladder: ten pairs, 5 to 50 in five pound steps, 550 pounds in all. The rack: included, and 230 centimetres long.

The verdict
Kensui Calibrated Chrome Dumbbells, 5 to 50 lb set
★★★★★ 4.81 from 27 reviews • $2,700 with the rack • ten pairs, 550 lb
  • The only set we priced that passed all four tests: metal outside, a checkout, the full ladder and the rack.
  • $712.50 less than Rogue's urethane set with its rack, and $6,230 less than Eleiko's.
  • A 34 mm diamond knurled chrome handle at every weight, on flat edged heads that stay where you set them down.

One more number settled it for me. Divide each racked set by its 550 pounds and you get what a pound of dumbbell costs, delivered with somewhere to put it.

Cost per pound, 5 to 50 set with a rack
Eleiko Evo + 10 pair rack$16.24
Ivanko IUDB urethane + rack$11.18
Ivanko machined, chrome ends + rack$6.21
Rogue urethane + 3 tier rack$6.20
Kensui chrome, rack included$4.91

What changed in the garage

A man in a grey shirt pressing two chrome 45 pound dumbbells overhead in a garage gym

The handle was the first thing I noticed. It is 34 millimetres of diamond knurled chrome at every weight, so presses with the 25s feel the same in the hand as rows with the 50s. Chrome looked like it would be slippery and it is not, because the knurl does the gripping.

The floor was the second. The heads have flat edges, so a dumbbell set down between sets stays where I put it instead of rolling under the bench. Third was the smell, which is to say there is none. Bare chrome has nothing on it to give off a smell on a hot afternoon, and it wipes clean with a cloth.

The number is the part I did not expect to care about. I stopped picking up the 25s by feel, because the weight is right there on a metal plate at both ends, with no paint on it to wear away.

If you are fitting out a studio rather than a garage, the bigger sets get cheaper by the pound. The 5 to 100 set with two racks is $7,900, which works out to $3.76 a pound across 2,100 pounds of dumbbells, and the 5 to 150 set with three racks is $17,900. Eleiko's 5 to 100 run is two separate sets at $19,770 before any rack.

Prices checked 13 October 2026 on kensui.com, eleiko.com, ivankobarbell.com and roguefitness.com. Eleiko's set and racks showed zero US stock that day. Ivanko machined is its RM/EPC cast iron set with chromed end plates. Rogue's rack is its 3 Tier Dumbbell Rack, which has room for five more pairs.

Four things to know before you order

Measure the wall. The rack is 230 cm long, 70 cm deep and 80 cm high, about 91 by 28 by 31 inches. That is about the length of Eleiko's 10 pair rack, on a little more floor.

It does not print a tolerance. Kensui sells these as calibrated, but the product page gives no plus or minus figure, and neither do Eleiko or Ivanko. Rogue prints 3%. REP prints 1% on its $1,599.99 urethane set, the best published number we found at any price. If a printed number matters more to you than metal on the outside, that is the honest trade.

Get the date in writing if you need it by one. Sets like this are made in batches, and the popular sizes sell through between them. If the rack has to be in your garage before a date, email the address on the product page before you check out and get the delivery date in writing.

Gyms can put their name on it. Kensui takes custom orders of 10 pairs or more with your logo engraved, and the same 5 to 50 set comes in a gold finish for $2,900.

Ten Pairs, The Rack, $2,700

The only set we priced that passed all four tests, for $712.50 less than the closest urethane set with its rack. Kensui gives you 100 days to train with it and promises a full refund, no questions asked, if it is not what you wanted.
